With drugs like Fentanyl, marijuana, cocaine, and other drugs becoming more accessible than ever, drug prevention is becoming an every day job to keep it from spreading into the Foothills.

So is the Town of Okotoks in danger of becoming a place for drug trafficking?

According to Cst. Martin Gaudet, drugs will always be around but the town hasn't been hit by an onslaught of drug trafficking.

"Okotoks does have their issues with hard drugs as well as some of the softer drugs," he says. "But it's not in epidemic stages."

Gaudet says the hard work of four different RCMP drug officers over the past year has really kept things from getting out of hand.

"There was four major drug busts in their time that really cleaned-up Okotoks to an excellent degree," he says. "This last year the town has been really good and they've provided enough funding for a one-man permanent crew unit."

Gaudet says all he and the rest of the police force can do in drug situations is keep things under control because it's hard to keep an eye on with Okotoks growing at a rapid rate and being so close to Calgary.

"Okotoks does have a drug sub-culture to it," he says. "Just like any other growing community here in Alberta, the more the community grows, and Okotoks has grown by leaps and bounds in the last five years, more of these people and more of these drug sub-cultures start to slip into the community."

If anyone knows or sees any drug-related activities, you're asked to call RCMP right away.
