When we think about migrating birds, it's usually about the one's heading to warmer climes to the south.

But local bird expert Greg Wagner says with the arrival of fall and winter we see a surprising number of birds move into the Foothills.

"Rough Legged Hawks, some of those will move through and head south. But we always have a few of those stick around through winter and they're going through in large numbers right now and they're kind of fun to watch. And I've heard stories of snowy owls being spotted closer to Calgary. Even things like song birds, we'll have things like Snow Buntings and Redpoll's showing up here."

He says Frank Lake, east of High River, is a local hot spot for bird watchers.

But he says even back yard feeders can produce some surprising results for bird watchers throughout the Fall and Winter.
