Campaigns are in full swing for candidates in the civic election.

This means signs are spotted throughout Okotoks boasting candidates names.

There's just three spots on public land in town where election candidates can post their signs. These signage corrals are located on Northridge Drive, Southridge Drive, and 32nd Street.

Cathy Duplessis, returning officer, says there's just a couple basics residents should keep in mind if they choose to place a sign on their own lawn.

"Basically if it's on private property, as long as it's not causing safety issues or visibility issues from the street or anything like that, they just need to comply with that common sense and the land use bylaw."

Election signs can only be up from nomination day through to election day.

Duplessis says candidates could face penalties if they don't take their signs down the day after the election.

"We'll start to issues some warnings and if we need to remove them there could be some charges and fines and they potentially might be disposed of too, and if you want to run again next term they might not be available to you."
