Some surprising results for Okotoks Municipal Enforcement during its 3rd quarter review presented to Okotoks Council on Monday.

The detachment was on high alert in September in school zones making sure children are safe, but got the ticket books out much more than planned.

Okotoks Municipal Enforcement Manager Tim Stobbs says it was almost alarming at how many tickets they gave out.

"We try our best to use our presence to be a deterrent, but unfortunately we did have to issue quite a number of tickets during that time," he says. "We issued 39 violation tickets in schools zones in the month of September."

Stobbs says most of the tickets were for motorists with a heavy foot.

"We had 19 for speeding, two for failing at a stop sign and probably the most alarming ones were we charged two people for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk and, of course, we had a few distracted driving charges as well."

He says even as kids are back in school and in a routine again, drivers need to have their eyes peeled at all times.

"We have to be very cautious that kids are back at school and still pretty excited to still be there, and the onus is on us drivers that they can safely travel to and from school."
