Time to pack away the flip flops and bust out the rubber boots for the next couple of days.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement as a strong low pressure system will develop overnight across central and southern Alberta. The system is said to develop by Tuesday evening west of Edmonton near the BC border.

Kirk Thorneby, meteorologist with Environment Canada, says Okotoks won't see as much moisture as northern regions.

"It's expected to bring a good chunk of rain to areas up near Grande Prairie, Grande Cache... they could see upwards of 50 mm and as you move a little bit further south obviously the rain amounts drop a bit, so as far south as Okotoks you're maybe looking upwards of 15- 20 mm of rain through the day on Wednesday and then some good dropping temperatures and some strong winds out of the west, northwest."

Places with a higher elevation near the foothills and mountain parks west of Calgary and Edmonton could see about 10 cm of snow.

Thorneby says a special weather statement was issued as a way to create awareness of a change in conditions.

"It's to bring attention to a big change in the weather and talk about things that may not reach warning but are significant events so for areas up around Grande Prairie where they may see a warning of 50 mm in 12 hours type of event it's a lead into it," he says. "Other areas around the province where we may not issue a warning because it doesn't meet that warning criteria of 50 mm in 12 hours, it's still a significant event."

As of Tuesday morning, the weather forecast is calling for conditions to improve by Friday.
