Thanks to Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue it was a happy ending for a dog that was stolen two years ago in BC.

Thor was taken from his back yard in Fort St. John then one day he wandered onto a job site in Spirit River where he was then taken back to Longview before being brought in to Heaven Can Wait.

Kim Hessel, founder of Heaven Can Wait, says Thor has an identification tattoo she was able to trace where she discovered he had been stolen, then the hunt began to find his rightful owners who now live in Halifax.

"A really enterprising young receptionist put it out on Facebook and was trying to touch base with people still living in Fort. St. John that might know where the owner was and we did get a connection. That started the first phone conversation between us and the owner and it was brilliant, she was crying and laughing 'oh my gosh I thought he was dead'."

This was a huge relief to Thor's owners as there was a dog fighting ring around Fort St. John at the time of his disappearance and they had feared the worst.

Hessel says Thor returned to his owners last week in great shape thanks to a connection with West Jet which brought a feeling of relief to a young girl.

"It was the owner's daughter who had actually let him out to back yard where he was subsequently stolen and she blamed herself for a long time and it's a tough thing for a 12-year-old to wrap her head around and now she's 14. He recognized her voice before he was even out of the kennel at the Halifax airport. It's really beautiful to know that this young girl can let all that guilt and grief go and know that he's fine."

She adds pet owners should always remember to use some form of identification on their pets like tattoos or microchips so they can be traced back to their homes.
