If you missed out on setting up your Christmas lights or were inspired to do more this holiday season after watching Light Up Okotoks there's still plenty of time to show off to your neighbours your inner Clark Griswold.

When setting up your Christmas lights there can be more safety risks to be aware of than just the balancing of a ladder and having assistance.

Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says have a good look at your electrical set-up both the plug-ins and cords before flipping the switch.

"Really check over your cords or extension cords for any cracks or frays or check the end plugs for any burn marks on the plugs themselves," he says. "Sometimes you'll end up with burn marks on the prongs or both ends of the plugs so just double check your cord before using them."

If you're not completely sure if your outlets are safe, Thevenot says it never hurts to ask someone.

"Switch them out, have a qualified person look at them if you're not sure and switch them out just to make sure that we're not going to cause any issues with it."

Thevenot also reminds everyone as most will start a fire in the fireplace this weekend with the cooler winter temperatures that your safety detectors are in good working order.

"Prior to starting them, ensure you have your carbon monoxide detectors in good working order, check the manufacturing date on them and give them a test just to make sure everything is good to go before you start your fireplaces."
