Outdoor enthusiasts will have new trails to travel in Okotoks this summer.

The Okotoks Trail Alliance group is looking for volunteers to help extend existing trails and make them more sustainable.

Monte Christensen, president of the Okotoks Trail Alliance, says they're looking to add about 1.2 kilometres of trail.

"There's a kind of hill-y, wooded area between the river and the Cimarron and Cimarron Estates sub divisions," he says. "It's not in the bottom of the river valley but it's kind of on the side hill, those are the trails we're developing here in the near future. On the other side of 32nd Street along the east side of the bridge there's another area that hopefully this year we're going to get to."

Christensen says the trails will have a variety of uses.

"These are multi-use trails and they're single track so they'd be very suitable for mountain biking and cross country runners. In the winter time they could be used for snow shoeing and if we had the snow you could use them for cross country skiing. You can also them for hiking and walking your dog as long as your dog is on a leash."

A meeting for those who are interested in helping to volunteer to build the trails can attend an orientation meeting on Apr. 21.

It'll take place at 6:00 p.m. between 96 and 106 on Cimarron Drive at the trail head. People are encouraged to either bike or walk to the meeting if possible.
