The Okotoks Fire Department had a quiet week in this edition of the Fire Report.

Crews were on the scene only 17 times which is beneficial when it's as cold as it has been lately.

Okotoks Deputy Fire Chief Pat MacIssac

Deputy Fire Chief Pat MacIssac says they were extremely lucky on the roads last week.

"Crews responded to a vehicle fire, they had a couple of motor vehicle collisions which is probably less than we expected given the conditions of the roads we were happy about that," he says.  "Two water pipe ruptures in buildings which had set off alarms, we investigated one smoke odour call and five medical calls and five alarm system activations."

With the holidays coming in hot, MacIssac says it doesn't hurt to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors because you may get distracted entertaining Christmas guests.

"It's a busy time for everybody you've got visitors over and people coming and going. Remember to test your smoke detectors, test your carbon monoxide detectors on a regular basis."

Christmas lights and additional holiday spirit can also be a potential fire hazard if not careful in how your electrical circuits are set-up says MacIssac.

"One of the major causes of fires at Christmas time is misuse of electrical appliances, make sure you're unplugging your extension cords when they're not in use and that circuits aren't being overloaded with all the extra stuff that's plugged into them."
