A classic fairy tale makes its way to the Rotary Performing Arts Centre Friday.

The Dewdney Players will be re-creating the famous Cinderella.

Directing the performance will be Nicola Payton of Okotoks who says there will be some differences in this version from others.

"The story of Cinderella is exactly the same but it's a British pantomime which comes with the twist as the ugly sisters are played by men and the prince is played by a woman," she says.

Payton says having the pantomime format will really bring out some strong performances by the opposite sex playing the roles of the prince and, especially, the ugly sisters.

"The men that are playing the ugly sisters are so good at it, they're not pretending to be women, they are literally men in dresses," she says. "As soon as you put a dress on them, they're just totally in character, they're horrible to Cinderella, they're funny, they hate each other and it's so much fun."

Payton says her cast of 17 performers all have strong local theatre backgrounds.

"We've got people from the local area, we've got young people who are at (Foothills Composite High School), we've got ex-high school fine arts students from the musical theatre program and we have a couple from Calgary but their families are local, so it's a variety of cast members."

All shows are at the RPAC with eight different performances, including two matinees.
