Okotoks residents and more specifically those living in the Cimarron community were on hand for a traffic calming study information session Thursday night giving their input to the possible plans for making their roadways safer in the area.

Leading the way for the calming project is Associated Engineering who will eventually give the green light on what work will be done on Cimarron Blvd and Cimarron Estates.

Manager of Transportation Darryl Schalk says for their first meeting with the community, the information session went fairly well.

"The biggest thing we got and that's really what the intent of our meeting was to create some dialog with the public who were attendance so that we could get their input on to the next phase of the project which is going to be creating a community advisory group," he says.

Those that made it out to the session have already expressed interest in being apart of the group.

Shalk says the meeting covered three major areas that cover traffic calming.

"The main traffic categories and it's traffic volume related with the sheer volume of traffic that is using the roadways, both Cimarron Blvd and running through the estates area. Traffic speed and pedestrian safety was big topic of discussion."

With the project a long way from commencing, Shalk says it was great to see a lot of community members step forward and voice their concerns and ideas.

"The goal of the project is to engage the public as much as possible so that the solutions that we come up with eventually are driven partially by the community and there's significant involvement from the public in developing those solutions."
