Seniors' Week is being celebrated in Okotoks.

The week helps to recognize those who have helped to shape the community and continue to volunteer their time.

Catherine Berlingieri, executive director of Heartland Retirement Residence, says seniors have been through a variety of historical moments.

"They are the generation that will have experienced the most changes throughout their lifetime," she says. "Depressions, putting a man on the moon, the introduction of technology, computers, all the way down to iPhones, the change of elements they've experienced won't happen again and kudos to them for experiencing this and taking us forward."

To help honour the occasion the residence has held a game challenge, choir, theatre, and dance performances, and the choir sang for the seniors at the High River Hospital and took part in the intergenerational program at Westmount School.

Berlingieri says it's important to acknowledge the seniors in the community.

"We really and truly believe that our philosophy is providing care and love in a trusting environment for the seniors we're taking care of. We have to be respectful of the contributions they've made for us and the future generations to come."

A Seniors' Week Celebration Tea is being held at the Okotoks Recreation Centre Curling Rink on Friday where guests will enjoy a complimentary lunch, door prizes, and live entertainment from the Ulmer School of Irish Dance.

The event goes from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.
