The Town of Okotoks honoured seniors last week with their annual Seniors' Tea.

Different events were held to acknowledge seniors and their contributions to the community for National Seniors' Week.

Sian Anderson, Volunteer Administrator for the Town, says it's important recognition is given to the older demographic.

"All the seniors in our community have contributed and continue to contribute so much to Okotoks and our surrounding areas," Anderson explains. "They have a huge amount of wisdom and are an amazing demographic in our community who we want to show our appreciation for."

Lucy Malmberg and Winston Parker were recognized at the tea by Mayor of Okotoks Bill Robertson, Highwood MLA Wayne Anderson, and Foothills MP John Barlow for celebrating their 100th birthdays.

Elida Raynor, President of the Okotoks Seniors' Club, says seniors have a lot to offer.

"They're still contributing today, they're volunteering all over the place and they're getting younger people active. We're trying to work with people who are a little more isolated and help them to get out and about and participate in the community... I think they're important people."

This year's tea was the largest event yet with just under 400 people taking part.

Anderson says this shows the level of commitment from the community to seniors and that they enjoy taking part.
