Spring and Summer makes it a whole lot easier to keep your vehicles clean, which is why carwashes see some good business in the summer.

However, Rick Crawshaw, High River's Bylaw Officer, reminds us to stick to the car washes because it's against Town Bylaws to wash your car in your driveway or on the street.

"Under the water conservation bylaw, you can't allow potable water to be running off your property onto the street from over watering your lawns or washing vehicles. Things along that line."

Phosphates from soaps used when you wash your car will go, untreated into the storm sewers and work their way into the eco-system where they can do severe damage.

Car washes send their dirty soapy water down the sanitary sewer, where it's treated before being introduced back into the environment.

Crawshaw says things like changing your oil or other vehicle fluids on the street or your driveway are "no-no's" as well, as they can do severe environmental damage if spilled or put untreated into storm sewers.
