With an unstable economy job loss has been substantial, especially in the energy sector.

John Barlow, Foothills MP, says the Canada Summer Jobs Program presents opportunities for students they normally might not have.

Barlow says the economic hardship can be felt all over the country.

"This can trickle down to every business, especially in our rural community, so summer jobs could be at a premium this year," Barlow said.

He says the government wants to present businesses with the chance to hire summer staff.

"We are going to give incentives to give small business owners and not-for-profits to hire students, to hopefully provide opportunities that would not have been there otherwise."

The program is for students 18-30 years old who plan to go back to school full time the following year.
