No big surprises in five federal byelections on Monday.

The two seats up for grabs in Calgary both went to the Conservatives by wide margins.

Foothills MP John Barlow says voters definitely made their voices heard.

"When you look at the numbers of the wins in Calgary, that's pretty profound. You know those are historic type numbers which even exceeded the numbers of Mr. Harper and Mr. Kenney, which were two of our strongest members for sure."

Barlow says the wins by Bob Bensen in Harper's old riding of Calgary Heritage and Stephanie Kusie in Calgary Midnapore sends a message to both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley that their policies around carbon taxes and their handling of the economy aren't finding an audience in Alberta.

The other three seats in Ontario and Quebec went to the ruling Liberals.
