Okotoks Deputy Fire Chief Pat MacIssac

Deputy Fire Chief Pat MacIssac says they responded to a pile of emergency situations.

"We had one grass fire, three motor vehicle collisions, a couple of hazmat calls with leaking fuels," he says. "We assisted EMS with 14 medical responses 14 time and five alarm system activations."

With a week away from the Canada Day long weekend, MacIssac says those enjoying themselves outdoors should take precautions to having a safe weekend.

"The province has issued a fire advisory which means they're asking people to be cautious and fire safe, but there's no fire bans currently in the Town of Okotoks."

Along with the fire advisory MacIssac says barbeque fires are something the department is emphasizing for those on the grill to watch and if a fire does start there are a couple of steps to follow.

"If you can immediately try and shut off the fuel source whether it's propane or natural gas. Try and extinguish it with a dry chemical extinguisher if you can. You have to be cautious with a potential grease fire because water can actually splatter and spread the fire."

The department responded to five different barbeque fires last summer.
