Okotoks Election Day is here and voters should be prepared before they head to cast their ballot.

Under the Elections Act there is a voter identification requirement, which requests electors bring a piece of government issued I.D. that includes their name and address, i.e. a driver's license.

Cathy Duplessis, Legislative and Policy Services Manager, says there are other avenues residents can take if they do not have a driver's license with their name and Okotoks address on it.

"If you're newly moved, in the process of renewing your driver's license, or if you don't have one anything with your name and address on it. A bank statement, any government correspondence, we've even had voters who provide utility bills, or if you've forgotten everything you can also use your pink insurance card."

Duplessis says there are some things that will not be accepted as voter identification.

"We're really following the list that's set out by the Alberta Government and the Chief Electoral Officer for the province. So potentially a prescription bottle may not be enough, but we really want to try to work with all electors to ensure they have the ability to vote."

She adds any junk mail, such as magazine subscriptions or flyers will not be accepted.

Okotoks residents can vote either at the Foothills Centennial Centre or the Okotoks Recreation Centre until 8 p.m.

Happy voting everyone!
