It's the time of year where sore throats, sniffles, and coughs seem to become almost a daily battle.

According to Dr. Judy MacDonald, medical officer of health with Alberta Health Services, the influenza strains expected to be seen the most this year are a combination of influenza AH3, AH1, and the usual influenza B.

MacDonald says there are a few measures people can take to try to prevent getting sick.

"Some of the best ways to keep yourself healthy are the influenza vaccine," she says. "That will only protect against influenza but it's a significant step you can take to protect yourself. The respiratory virus and gastrointestinal viruses like norovirus, those things include washing your hands frequently and keeping your hands away from your face."

Covering coughs is also a key factor in preventing the spread of viruses.

MacDonald says the flu shot will be available in less than a week.

"Tuesday, October 20 is when we launch the immunization program. We will have influenza clinics offered through public health throughout Alberta and also some pharmacists and physician offices will have the vaccine at the same time."
