Canada and the United States get down to business Wednesday, August 16, when it comes to renegotiating the NAFTA agreement.

Foothills MP John Barlow, says he'll be following the talks closely.

"This is our most critical trade agreement. The United States is our number one customer. Just about anything we produce, whether it's oil, beef, manufactured products. We have to ensure that we reach a deal, that's not only a good deal, but a good deal for Canada.

Barlow says he hopes in the end the new deal eliminates some red tape for producers.

"We want to ensure any deal we come to that COOL (Country of Origin Labelling) is not on the table. If anything, we can eliminate some bureaucracy to ensure that trade is easy, with very minimal obstacles to going back and forth across the border. They're (The U.S.) is our number one customer, and we want to ensure that we can maintain that relationship."

One of the core objectives being looked for by Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is maintaining the rights to supply management, mainly including agricultural products.
