Foothills Conservative MP John Barlow and the rest of his Caucus are up in arms Friday over a move by the Liberals to repeal two bills aimed at making union activities more transparent.

The previous Tory Government put in the legislation limiting political contributions from unions and corporations.

Barlow says it's simple patronage coming at a time when there are bigger issues facing the country.

"You know with the full blown crisis we have in the energy sector, especially here in Alberta, where thousands of people are losing their jobs. It's incredible that the priority for this government is repaying their union friends, rather than coming up with a strategy for getting Canadians back to to work."

The legislation also forced unions and native bands to file public information returns showing where they're spending their money.

Here's the release from John Barlow's office:

Liberals choose union patronage over transparency and accountability.

High River, AB – Yesterday the Liberal Government announced they intend to repeal Bill C-377 and Bill C-525.

At the federal level, the previous Conservative government introduced extensive reforms to ensure Canadians have trust in their political institutions.

The Accountability Act reformed the financing of political parties to reduce opportunities to influence politicians with contributions, banning union and corporate donations and levelling the playing field among individual contributors.

Bill C-377 created transparency and accountability for unions.

It requires labour organizations to file a public information return with the Canada Revenue Agency on an annual basis.

The disclosure requirements include financial statements, including a statement of assets and liabilities and a statement of income and expenditures, and other prescribed financial information, including amounts paid for political and lobbying activities, and the salaries paid to executives and staff.

The Liberal Party campaigned on accountability and transparency and it is obvious they have no intention of keeping their election promises.

One of their first actions is to repeal two bills built on a foundation of accountability and transparency.

It is shameful during an economic crisis and mass job losses in the energy sector the Minister of Employment Workforce Development and Labour has made it her priority to repeal Bill C-377 and C-525 instead of constructing a plan to create jobs and growth.

“With the jobs crisis in the energy sector right now it is baffling to see the Minister of Employment’s top priority is repealing bills imposing transparency and accountability on unions. It appears paying back union leadership for its contributions during the election campaign is more important to the Liberal government than hard-working Canadians who have lost their jobs.”– John Barlow, MP for Foothills, Deputy Critic, Employment, Workforce Development and Labour.

Barlow also had a chance to speak Thursday in Parliament in response to the government's Speech From the Throne:
