Environment Week in Okotoks got underway on Sunday, June 4, with eco-friendly events scheduled throughout the week.

Yesterday the Town of Okotoks Sustainability Department and Environmental Educators held their Clothing Exchange Event in the Operations Centre, where residents could swap and shop for some new attire.

Environmental Educator, Charne Crafford, says all leftover items were donated at the end of the day.

"People brought clothing they're not using, household linens, purses, luggage, and at the end of the day we donated everything leftover to Project Warmth, who we're partnering with this year. They're based out of Calgary, and they donate to the city's needy, they provide clothing completely free of charge as they're 100% non-profit."

Unusable clothing donations were also donated to the Eco Centre as part of the Okotoks Textile Recycling Program.

Crafford adds the timing for the event couldn't have been better.

"This event is a great idea because a lot of people are doing spring cleaning now, they're wanting to get rid of old stuff and get new stuff. This is a very cost effective way to change out your wardrobe for new things, and also to make sure the things you are donating are going to a really good cause. We're also diverting a lot from the landfill by doing textile recycling, and not just throwing out the clothing into the garbage."

There will be more events held over the next week centred around the environment and engaging families around town.

Environment Week wraps up Saturday, June 10, which is also the grand opening for the Environmental Education Centre.
