The Alberta Kennel Club is Hosting their Winter Classic Show at the Spruce Meadows Equi-plex this weekend.

Leeza Prokopishyn with the Alberta Kennel Club says the aim of the show is to promote pet education for dog owners.

"The Alberta Kennel Club is a club that was formed about 100 years ago." Prokopishyn says "We're interested in dog sports and dog hobbies and also promoting responsible dog ownership.  That's what we're about."

Leeza Prokopishyn gives us a little more information on what to expect from the dog show.

"It's three days of confirmation and obedience which is great fun for the family to watch, and you can see all kinds of different breeds of dogs and also learn about them."

Confirmation she says is like a beauty pageant for dogs and the point is to figure out which dog competing is the best example of their breed. Obedience is open to mixed and pure breed dogs and it's a chance for pet owners to show the public how well trained their pets are.

Prokopishyn says the junior handling is usually a family favourite.

"Well we have junior handling so if kids like to watch other kids doing these events, there is that opportunity around lunch-time on Saturday and Sunday."

The Winter Classic Dog Show will also showcase vendors, breeders, and pet experts to answer your training questions.

Families that are contemplating getting a pup are welcome as it's also a great learning opportunity and will help you decide where to purchase your new family member and even help you to decide on a breed.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12, and $5 for seniors.
