The sound of music can now be heard in Okotoks' Olde Towne Plaza with the addition of a piano.

Artur Gieck, owner of the Calgary Piano House, donated the piano which is set up for anyone to play and entertain with.

Gieck says it's a well-built antique.

"It's a Kreisler made by Mason & Risch so it's a 1936 Canadian-made piano and aside from the appearance, the finish of it, the inside is excellent, it tunes really nice, great tone," he says. "These are wonderful instruments and people are getting rid of them because they don't understand what they have in the instrument... it's quality of instrument."

Allan Boss, Culture and Heritage Manager with the Town of Okotoks, says the piano will help to create a better atmosphere at the public gathering place.

"It infuses the community with culture... communities take ownership. I've surveyed all of the businesses that are around the plaza, gone to each one of them, told them there's a piano coming out, and every one of them have been so supportive. They're all willing to run out if it's raining and put the cover on. It's a great opportunity for community growth."

Boss says the piano will remain in its spot on McRae Street at Olde Towne Plaza until the end of September.

The Okotoks Arts Council will also be hosting a Paint the Piano contest in the spring where people can submit a design for the piano. The winner will receive $250 and the opportunity to paint their winning design on the instrument.
