Hunting season is underway and local officers are making sure hunters are obeying the law.

Nanton RCMP and Claresholm Fish and Wildlife patrolled the area west of Nanton and Highway 22 over the weekend to make sure hunters were up to speed on rules and regulations.

Cpl. Travis Ogilvie says the patrol was sparked from previous issues.

"Earlier this year we had received complaints from landowners of hunters hunting without permission so we contacted Claresholm Fish and Wildlife and put together a joint operation," he says.

Ogilvie says it's important for hunters to be respectful of landowners and keep those relationships in good shape.

"If hunters want to continue hunting then they need to have permission from the landowners or the landowners may just shut down hunting to everybody."

Ogilvie says if hunters don't ask landowners for permission, they could be charged for trespassing.

The operation visited approximately 100 hunters and Ogilvie says a majority of them were compliant with the rules and regulations, calling it a good weekend.

Rifle season officially opened on Sunday.
