100 Women Who Care Okotoks and Area chose to make a difference in the community by donating $3600 to a local charity last night. Founder Karen Love says the group voted to donate to Rowan House Emergency Shelter at their last meeting.

"Every time 100 Women Who Care Okotoks and Area meets, any women who attend nominate a charity. At our last meeting there was two nominations for Rowan House and one for another non-profit in the area. Then the women decided after they heard the speech that they wanted to put their money towards Rowan House.

Love says she's known Sherrie Botten, Executive Director of Rowan House, for a long time and was happy the women chose to support this charity.

"I think being from the area as well you have a certain affinity to some charities. And also I've known Sherrie for a long time, so it was really nice to get her charity nominated. But when you join 100 Women you agree to give your cheque to whoever gets nominated because we all vote."

Each time 100 Women Who Care Okotoks and Area meet they decide on one charity where they each donate $100. Love says this was the second donation made by this cause.

"So our first meeting was in November last year, and then our second one was in March. We meet four times a year, maximum of an hour. So we do the voting and then we also listen to the previous recipient come and tell us what they did with our money. So Sherrie will come to our next meeting and she'll tell us what she did with our donation tonight."

Love says the group's next meeting is May 5 at the Crystal Ridge Golf Club in Okotoks at 7 pm. The group has grown from an initial 24 women to 36 and they are hoping to see more women out to support organizations in the community.
