For youth looking for a way to keep active over the winter months indoor rugby might just be what they are looking for.

The Fifth Foothills Lions Annual Winter Training Rugby Academy is up and running with some of the sessions taking place in High River before they move to the Crescent Point Field House.

Coach Chris Powell says the point is to introduce kids to the sport and improve their skills.

"We are running our 5th annual rugby academy," said Powell. "Which basically involves both trying to introduce kids to rugby and for people already involved in rugby enhancing their skills."

Once a week they also meet and have a big touch game.

The highlight of the training is going to Las Vegas to take part in the Las Vegas Invitational 7s Rugby Tour.

"This will be our third year going down."

The best part of the academy is players get to learn the game before they start to play games and after training all winter players are ready to take part in their school and club teams.

The program is always looking for new players, coaches, referees and some sponsors. All you need to play is a mouth guard and running shoes.
