The Canadian Premier League announced a monumental change in soccer at Spruce Meadows yesterday.

Cavalry FC Soccer is set to debut next spring, with the guiding principal being to change the landscape of Canadian soccer.

Former Tim Horton's Executive and Commissioner of the CPL, David Clanachan, says it's time for youth to carry their dreams forward.

" Allowing 16 and 17 year olds in this country to live on with their dream, and be able to aspire to be a professional player coast to coast, all different types of cities. That's the real vision behind this," said Clanachan.

An all natural grass, 5,000 seat stadium will be built, located where the meadows on the green currently sits on the Spruce Meadows grounds.

Chair and CEO, Linda Southern-Heathcott says Spruce Meadows is thrilled to be part of this journey.

" Our motto is good friendship, good sport, and good commerce, and I believe that the soccer and football and foot soldiers bring all that together for us." she said.

General Manager and Head Coach of the new Cavalry FC team, Tommy Wheeldon Jr., says this move will support players who want to stay close to home.

" We no longer have to send our kids overseas. They can stay and play, and follow their dreams in their home town city in front of their friends and family. That's so powerful." said Wheeldon.

The Cavalry name was inspired by military to honour the armed services and first responders, and the attire will army green and Calgary red.
