The tree canopy in High River is something residents are justifiably proud of.

But the trees need to be maintained to stay healthy.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says the Town's moving ahead with its Tree Removal and Replacement Program.

"Not anything that anybody will really notice around town other than there are a few along 12th Avenue that need to start being removed and those are massive, mature trees so it will be noticeable when those come down but for the most part, safety first, and on 12th Avenue a lot of those big old branches are starting to break off and we had a couple of near misses last year so we're going to take care of things before we have a problem," he says.

The department had asked for $60,000 but council approved $30,000 for this year to deal with the trees and on-going maintenance.
