A local rancher may take home a 2017 Calgary Stampede Western Legacy Award tonight.

John Scott of Longview has volunteered with the Calgary Stampede for over 60 years, and has been nominated for a Sustained Contribution Award in the Individual category.

Scott is a third generation rancher, and owner and founder of John Scott Productions and Motion Picture Animals.

The award recognizes individuals who have exhibited extraordinary community support over time.

Also nominated for this award is Peter Spear and Joyce Pallister-Bronsch.

Scott says, he helped organize the first Stampede Rodeo School.

"We started this Boys Steer Riding School in connection with Calgary Stampede to train young riders how to get on these animals safely. That was the first Rodeo School that the Stampede had that ran for five, or six, years I guess. A lot of those kids that came to the steer riding school, they went on the become saddle bronc and bareback riders, and bull riders."

It's an honor to be nominated, Scott says.

"They preserve history and heritage, and they recognize people from young people to older people that do a lot of volunteer type things."

Scott has also been supplying livestock for the Calgary Stampede Parade since he was 18-years-old, and has served on numerous Stampede committees.

The award presentations will be made at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park starting at 5:00 PM tonight.
