The Livingstone Range School division has issued a lock-out notice to about 110 employees who are members of CUPE.
The union represents custodians, bus drivers, support staff and teaching aides.
CUPE Alberta president D'arcy Lanovaz says the notice took him by surprise.
He had hoped to use the summer to continue talks and hopefully come to a resolution.
The main issue is the right to contract out work.
Tthe disivion has schools in Nanton and Claresholm.
