While many people may be looking forward to a long weekend off, Okotoks RCMP will be be hard at work.

Police will be out in full force this August long weekend to make sure the public is safe.

Sgt. Sukh Randhawa says motorists shouldn't be in a rush when they head out on the roads.

"Officers expect to see an increase in traffic volume and a significant increase in the number RVs and motorcycles on the road, so we're asking the public to be patient, put their cell phones away, and drive carefully."

He says the rules for texting and impaired driving also apply to those who go boating.

Randhawa says drivers should make sure their vehicles are in top shape before they start their travels.

"I understand that long road trips can be tiring for drivers and passengers, but also can be hard on their vehicle, so it's up to the driver to check the oil, engine, washer fluid, and lights before they get on the road."
