It's that time of year when storm drains start backing up as the spring melt is underway.

With freezing temperatures overnight, it can cause some issues on the streets of High River and elsewhere.

The Town of High River issued a notice last week to prepare for some potential overland flooding.

Watch out for some big puddles around town. It's time to prepare for overland flooding from storm drains backing up.

They've provided some tips to help with water buildup on the streets if you notice it causing issues.

The Town is asking you to just give the Public Works team a call at 403-652-4657 to report overland flooding. You can also send them feedback online at highriver.ca/report-a-concern.

And they've also added some tips for homeowners:

  • Check storm drains regularly to ensure they are clean and free from debris. This will allow for the effective drainage of street water.
  • Ensure eavestroughs are pointed away from your home and lead water from gutters away from your home's foundation.
  • Clear snow from sidewalks and driveways onto lawns and gardens instead of roads. This waters your lawn and keeps drains clear, allowing street water to drain effectively.
  • Check your home's exterior regularly for soil erosion, cracks, or issues with its walls or foundation.
